Amanda Dignon Device: iPad Mini
Name of App: Jungle Coins – Learn Coin Math Cost: $2.99
Creator of the app: Andrew Short Grade Level(s): 5-8
Brief description of the app:
This app was created for students who are learning about Money. The students are able to sort coins. They are also able to tap on each coin and it tells them how much that coin is worth. The students are also able to count the money, and they will be told if it is correct or not. The students also have the chance to compare coins, whether they are equal, greater or less than. The app will also give the students a problem, and they have to figure out how much change they have to give back. You are able to select the level of difficulty.
What content did you find useful about this site?
I think that the most useful part of the app is being able to compare the money. This is one of the most important things that students need to know when they are learning money.
Unit of study to connect with: Money Unit, life skills (making change)
Subject/s to incorporate:
Math, Social Studies (history of coins & money), Science (study of different metals used to make coins)
Specific skills to tie in with this link:
The students should already know how to add and subtract. It is helpful if they know the comparing signs. They should also know all of the coins.
Specific outcome of visiting this site:
This app is great for students who are learning how to use money. The app is based off of levels of difficulty. The first level only gives you nickels and pennies. Each level adds a different coin for the students to work with. In the settings, you are able to pick the level that you want the students to work on. This app will helps students learn how to use math in a few different ways. I do suggest that students become familiar with money before using this app. They should not start using this app without having any knowledge of money. It is also great that they give the students problems on how to give change back. This is something that I have seen students struggle with in the past, and the app is able to let the students practice this at many different levels.
