LESSON TOPIC:
NEEDS ADDRESSED: Identifying key components of Mexico’s location and geography with the use of text features, search tools and content specific vocabulary.
RATIONALE: The students will be starting a new unit on Mexico. This lesson will introduce them to the country, its location in the world and its geography. The students will continue to learn about Mexico throughout the week.

Craft and Structure: Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently.

Communities Around the World: World communities can be located on globes and maps.
OBJECTIVE: The students will be able to locate Mexico on a map of the world and identify key parts of the country’s geography.
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE: Mexico, geography, globe, search tools (key words, sidebars, hyperlinks), text features.
MOTIVATION: The teacher will bring up Google Earth on the Smartboard and write in Mexico City, Mexico. As the teacher explores the inner streets and layout of the capital the students will then think-pair-share about what they know about Mexico or what they just saw. The teacher will then zoom out and show the students where Mexico as a country is located in the world in comparison to long island. (5 minutes)
BRIEF PROCEDURE:
1. The teacher will then put the students in small groups and take out the globes. The teacher will then ask the students to work together and take turns in order to locate Mexico on the globe. Teacher will walk around and assist. (5-7 minutes)
2. Next, the teacher will hand out maps of North America and ask the students to color in Mexico on the map in either red or green (since red, green and white are the flag colors) and color in New York and Long Island, in any other color than red or green. Another map will be given out of the world this time and likewise the students will color in Mexico on the map in either red or green and they will also color the United States in any other color than red or green. (7-8 minutes)
3. Next the teacher will ask everyone to hand in their maps into the IN basket and sit in front of the Smartboard. The teacher will bring up the webpage on Mexico’s geography: http://www.timeforkids.com/destination/mexico.
4. The teacher will then open the main page and read about Mexico’s location and geography. While reading through the text with the class the teacher will:
a. Go over academic vocabulary and key underlined words
b. Click on hyperlinks and sidebars to learn more information about specific topics
c. Ask for student volunteers to both read and manipulate the website from the Smartboard.
d. Answer any student questions (total for part 4 = 20 minutes)
5. After a class discussion the students will go back to their individual desks and write what they learned about today in their learning logs. The students will be encouraged to either draw and label or write about the location and geography of Mexico. (8 minutes)

TECHNOLOGY COMPONENT: The motivational activity, Google Earth, will be accessed from the Smartboard as well as the website on Mexico’s geography.
ADAPTATIONS:
· When working in small groups, students that need extra assistance and positive roles models will be placed in groups accordingly
· Students that have difficulty coloring in the maps will be provided with filled out maps printed on transparency paper so that they can overlay the transparency paper over their map to assist them in finding the desired locations.
· While coloring in Mexico on the maps, gifted students can also label other parts of the world and other states of America
· Gifted students can also use and explore additional higher level text from other websites or e-books using classroom i-pads to incorporate into their learning logs; this would be termed as self-directed learning. This would occur when the students are working independently on their learning logs.
ASSESSMENT OF COMMON CORE STANDARDS: Common Core Standards addressed in this lesson will be assessed during the student group work and completion of maps, during class discussion of content found on website and though the use of the website and its various features. After completed, the learning logs will also serve as an assessment tool of student acquired knowledge.
